A trade between the Chicago Blackhawks and the New York Rangers, two Original Six rivals, was completed today in hockey history.
Rangers and Blackhawks complete a trade
New York announced the contract purchase of
Doug Bentley from the Chicago Blackhawks, which ultimately led to him being reunited with his brother Max Bentley, who was already on the Rangers' roster.
Doug was a very skilled left-winger and considered a star for the Blackhawks, making many shake their heads as to why they would send him packing to their rivals, but it all makes sense.
Many trades were demanded back in the day, and if not fulfilled in the players' favor, they would simply stop playing.
In 1952-53, Doug played 70 games, tallying up 22 goals and 22 assists for a total of 44 points.
He would play the majority of his NHL career with the Blackhawks (12 years), and the trade to New York only lasted 20 games, making it a special last season in the league playing alongside his brother with the Rangers.
In his whopping 12-NHL-seasons, he amassed 219 goals, 324 assists in 565 games played.
He was named to the NHL First All-Star Team (1943, 1944, 1947), named to the second All-Star Team (1949), played in the All-Star Game (1947, 1948, 1949, 1950, 1951) and was traded by the Blackhawks on August 11th, 1953.
Bentley received his Hockey Hall of Fame induction in 1964 and would later go on to coaching in the minor leagues into the late 1960s.
He sadly passed away on Nov. 24, 1972.
