Panthers cup champ unexpectedly walks away from hockey to pursue new career path after winning second cup
The Florida Panthers and Bill Zito are losing a vital part of the organization, as CEO Matt Caldwell is leaving the NHL in order to pursue opportunities elsewhere, with the Minnesota Timberwolves.
CEO Matt Caldwell has been with the Florida Panthers organization since 2016.
He's seen the team progress on an upward trajectory that has seen two Stanley Cups won by the team.
By all means, indicative of the success he's built in Sunrise.
With the hiring of Bill Zito, the team ensured it'd be a competitor for the future, and while it wasn't a Stanley Cup-winning team outright, it all worked out in 2023-24.
Now with a taste of two Stanley Cups, Caldwell is pursuing other opportunities, this time in the NBA with the Minnesota Timberwolves.
A stark contrast to one of the best sports leagues in the world.
He will also be joining the WNBA's Lynx as CEO.
Caldwell's exit comes after COO Bryce Hollweg and CRO Shawn Thornton have departed the Panthers organization.
Will Attrition Wear Down the Florida Panthers Organization?
Now comes the part of the rebuild in the front office, where the team will have to replace Thornton and Hollweg.
The man who built the team from the bottom up, Bill Zito, remains. In tow is
Sergei Bobrovsky for another season in 2025-26 as the team aims for a three-peat.
The lack of stability could negatively affect the team, but in all actuality, the team will be busy preparing for next season.
While the front office plans its vision for the next five years or more.
