A longtime 12-seasoned NHL veteran has announced his retirement at the age of 36, following an announcement from the NHL Alumni on Wednesday.

With Jonathan Toews coming out of retirement, several others are deciding it's their turn to make a career decision after NHL free agency.
The NHL Alumni issued the following statement:
After being selected in the first round of the 2007 NHL Entry Draft by the Edmonton Oilers, Riley played three seasons of NCAA hockey with Cornell University.

During the 2010 offseason, Riley joined the Canes
via trade and would make his NHL debut with Carolina on December 21st, 2011. Riley would score his first career goal the very next season on March 3, 2013, adding two assists for a three-point night. Riley played 242 regular-season games for Carolina before signing with the NHLBruins
during the 2016 offseason, where he'd play the next two seasons. After signing with the BlueJacketsNHL in 2018 and playing 179 games with the club, Riley was acquired by the MapleLeafs ahead of the 2020 postseason. Riley later joined the
NHLJets, Arizona Coyotes, and TBLightning before playing the final of his 628 games with the NYRangers
in 2023-24.

Congratulations, Riley, and welcome to the NHL Alumni Association!
Earlier this week 28-year old Christian Fischer decided to hang up the skates as well after a long career.
It's quite clear that players in their late 20s or even mid-30s have not received much interest on the free agent market and decide to take retirement upon themselves.
