Hockey Community Mourns The Devastating Passing Of A Beloved Young Hockey Player Max Akerson
The hockey community in Minnesota is wrought with sadness, as they have lost someone way too young. In a familiar story we've heard way too many times this year, a Champlin Park teen at the age of 16 has passed away.
Max Akeron, who went to Champlin Park High School and played goaltender for the Champlin Park Rebels. Akerson was a beloved teammate and friend in his community.
Akerson was diagnosed with liver cancer in 2021 and had been fighting the ongoing battle, but unfortunately lost. He had surgery and treatments to stop the cancer in its path, but it rebounded.
The hockey community spread across Minnesota, the US, and Canada will mourn the impact of this loss.
His mother posted the news on Social Media.
"Today at 10:20 a.m. Max tried to get out of bed and collapsed in his dad's arms. He took his last breath with his parents' hands on him. He is free from pain and suffering. He fought so long and hard. He did not let cancer win. He lived every day."
Despite his best efforts and treatmentsafforded to the teenager, the cancer would return and claim his life only days after his 16th birthday.
Champlin Park's coach would share his feelings:
"Not fair, because, you know, one of the good ones is gone," he said.
Inside the Champlin Ice Forum lobby is Max's sweater -- one he never got to wear.
"Seeing his last name on the back of a jersey and the kid never got to wear it tears you up," Potter said.
The Champlin Park High School was one of the first to make a memorial in honor of Akerson's life. The tributes continued to pour in as the rival club, the Andover Huskies posted a heartfelt message in memory of Akerson.
Our deepest condolences go out to the Akerson family, friends, and Max's teammates.
Keep an eye out as a tribute will be rolled out in tribute for Max, across the US and Canada.
