Edmonton Oilers release statement on condition of fan involved in medical injury on saturday
Last night's Battle of Alberta between the Edmonton Oilers and Calgary Flames was put on hold as a fan in the audience had a medical emergency.
During the epic Battle of Alberta, which takes place between the rival teams who share the province, a medical emergency occurred in the 1st-period.
Both the Calgary Flames and Edmonton Oilers would stop play during the match in order to allow the medical personnel of Rogers Place to do their job.
The incident would cause the game to be paused during the first ten minutes of the first period.
According to Sportnets' Louie DeBrusk, a fan collapsed behind the Oilers' bench in Rogers Place. A harrowing incident of that nature would give anyone pause, and thankfully, to OEGSE, they were able to work diligently to help the fan out and get them a ride to the hospital.
Due to league rules, the game had to be paused as the ambulance which left had to be replaced.
In the NHL, annual rehearsals for a variety of unthinkable moments have become mandatory. There is a defibrillator behind every team's bench, and the benches are moveable to allow easier access. There are trauma doctors in close proximity to the ice and two ambulances in the arena's bowels.
Two incidents in the league that happened that caused this change, and one involved Red Wings player Jiri Fischer's heart attack in 2005.
Another was
Chris Pronger's scare during the 1998 playoffs, where he'd require CPR on the bench after taking a puck to the chest.
Thankfully, the NHL has learned from its past mistakes and has been ready for an incident such as this which could have saved the fan's life.
The Battle of Alberta would resume, and the Oilers would come out on top, 3-2. We just hope that the fan is safe and recovering after going through a horrific scare such as that last night.
Thank you, OEGSE and Rogers Place staff, for all that you do.
