Edmonton Oilers complete major last-minute decision on forward Corey Perry before free agency
Coming off his 1st full year with the Oilers, the team appears to have made a decision on pending UFA veteran forward Corey Perry.
After he helped the Edmonton Oilers achieve appearances in back to back Stanley Cup Finals, veteran forward Corey Perry is a pending UFA but has also spoken about his hope to play another year.
He's coming off a 1-year contract with an AAV (average annual value) of $1.15 million, and he turned up his performance in the postseason with 10 goals in 22 games.
But given Edmonton's current salary cap situation, it may prove difficult for both sides to work out a deal.
Per NHL analyst Pierre LeBrun, it's been hard to get both sides to find common ground on a new contract.
Corey Perry likely to leave Oilers in free agency
Corey Perry still hopes to re-sign in Edmonton but the pathway to common ground on a deal has been difficult with Oilers' cap situation. Very possible Perry ends up on the free-agent market Tuesday. But door remains open with Edmonton.
Perry signed with the Oilers in late 2023 after his contract was terminated with the Blackhawks for an incident of unprofessional behavior, and it's paid off for Edmonton with consecutive trips to the Stanley Cup Final.
However, Perry has made unfortunate history by now having lost in the Stanley Cup Final in 5 of the last 6 years on multiple teams.
At 40, it won't be long before Perry has to hang up the skates, but he's been open about his desire to play at least another year in the NHL before leaving the game for good.
