The Chicago Blackhawks will miss the Stanley Cup playoffs in 2025, and they'll have to be sellers again at the deadline, could they move Seth Jones?
The Chicago Blackhawks will not be competing in the Stanley Cup playoffs this season, as the rebuild continues another season.
One casualty of the team's failure to make it to the postseason will be former Norris Trophy candidate Seth Jones.
According to NHL Insider Frank Seravalli, the Blackhawks could be in discussion to move their $76 million defenseman.
Jones was listed on Seravalli's newest trade board at No. 8 on the list.
Jones was rewarded richly by former Blackhawks GM Stan Bowman with a $76 million contract.
He'd sign with the team in July 2021 and was blindsided when Bowman would exit the organization.
He'd find himself in a rebuild during the 2022 season, not ideal for someone who wants to win a Stanley Cup.
Now, with the announcement of a salary cap raise in the next few years, NHL teams could easily fit Jones's expensive cap hit under their cap.
The Blackhawks would benefit from moving Jones, as they can recapture that money to find a player who fits their timelines.
Moving Jones to Edmonton would fulfill a goal for the defenseman who wants to compete for a Stanley Cup. It'd also relieve GM Kyle Davidson of the massive contract burden the Hawks are under with him on the roster.
Another Blackhawks who have joined him on Seravalli's trade list is
Connor Murphy, at #14.
While
Ryan Donato, the gritty, physical forward is listed at #17, with the Senators as possible suitors for him.
