On this day, August 9th, in Chicago Blackhawks history, the team completed a one-for-one swap with the St. Louis Blues for Pierre Plante in exchange for Dick Redmond in 1977.

The Chicago Blackhawks completed a trade with rival club, the St. Louis Blues, 48 years ago today.
The team traded Dick Redmond, who up until that point had worn the Blackhawks' crest since 1973-74 after arriving from the West Coast, playing for the California Seals in the NHL.
Redmond would be sent to the Blues for the 1977-78 season, which he'd split between the Atlanta Flames (42 GP) and St. Louis Blues (28). It seemed as if he wasn't a fit there.
Whereas new arrival Pierre Plante would play nearly a full season for the Blackhawks during the year, suiting up for 77 games, scoring 38 points (10-28) with 77 PIMs. A real bruiser.

Redmond & Plante's Significance in the NHL

Old-time hockey is something we often romanticize, and rarely take the time to critically examine these trades until down the road.
For Redmond, who played for the Blackhawks for five season's wasn't able to help the team win a cup, playing 341 games with the team, scoring 221 points, 218 PIMs.
The Blackhawks gave up a solid defensive player for Pierre Plante, who would only suit up as a Hawk for a year, and would offer secondary scoring at the most.
He'd later play for the New York Rangers the next season, in what seemed for him to be one of his last stops before the end of his career in 1979-80, suiting up for the Quebec Nordiques.
Plante was a former 9th overall pick in the 1971 NHL Amateur Draft, and wasn't able to secure the hardware needed to make a greater name for himself during an era where players would put it all on the line every night to secure a win.
