NHL Insider Danny Websiter reported today that former Chicago Blackhawks defenseman will be joining his former team, the Vegas Golden Knights, in a broadcasting role, as life after hockey continues.
Former Blackhawks defenseman Alec Martinez
retired after playing his last season in Chicago.
The 862 game defenseman suited up for the Los Angeles Kings, Vegas Golden Knights, and the Blackhawks during his career.
He was unable to find a team in free agency this summer.
He'd find success as a Los Angeles King and a Vegas Golden Knight, winning three Stanley Cups during his career.
Now, instead of lacing up the skates for another season, he's found a purpose in hockey off the ice: broadcasting.
Alec Martinez does the unthinkable and heads to tv
According to Martinez, the step into broadcasting wasn't what he'd originally planned after retiring from the NHL.
«I always said I was never going to be on TV, because I didn't want to do that, but here I am.»
The defenseman will be joining the Vegas Golden Knights broadcast for select games during the season. After the Golden Knights' optional skate held this morning at National City Arena, he fielded questions from a curious media presence who wondered what his goals were after hockey.
«[Darren Eliot] is the one who put it in my ear, and I'm willing to try anything, so here we are. Not anything,» Martinez quickly amended, «Because there are certain things- like, I'm never going to coach. I'll stare directly into the camera and say this. I will never coach at a collegiate or professional level.»
Martinez will begin his career as a broadcaster in the NHL when the Golden Knights take on the Western Conference juggernaut, the Colorado Avalanche.
For an idea that has been put in the former defenseman's head for over a year now, it'll be interesting to see how he'll run with the opportunity.
Martinez spent the majority of his time in Chicago
out of the lineup, dealing with injuries.
Here's to better opportunities for the former Stanley Cup Champion in the future.
