The Chicago Blackhawks organization announces the signing of a 28-year old defenseman
The Chicago Blackhawks organization has officially announced the signing of veteran defenseman Cavan Fitzgerald to a two-year AHL contract with their affiliate, the Rockford IceHogs. This move solidifies a key piece of Rockford's blue line heading into the upcoming season.
The IceHogs organization announced the news in a post on X:
"Rockford, IL - The Rockford IceHogs and General Manager Mark Bernard announced Monday that the team has signed defenseman Cavan Fitzgerald to a two-year AHL contract."
Fitzgerald, 28, made a strong impression after joining the IceHogs last season on a professional tryout agreement. His leadership and physical presence quickly earned him a spot as one of the team's core players.
At the end of the season, he was voted both MVP and Hardest Hitter at the IceHogs' End of Year Awards - recognition of the impact he made in just one season.
The Boston, Massachusetts native led all Rockford defensemen with eight goals and finished the regular season with 22 points, as well as a +5 rating in 63 games. He was also the team's assistant captain, a role he previously held for four seasons with the Chicago Wolves, including during their 2022 Calder Cup win.
The 6-foot-1 defenseman brings size but also experience, having played 373 AHL games for the San Jose Barracuda, Charlotte Checkers, Chicago Wolves, and now Rockford, despite never being drafted in the NHL.
With this new contract, the IceHogs and the Blackhawks organization are investing in leadership, grit, and consistency. He will play an important role in the AHL, where many of the team's top prospects should play in the coming years.
If he keeps performing well, he could even get an opporunity to prove himself in the NHL at some point.
