The hockey community is mourning the devastating loss of a former first-round pick.

Latest reports confirmed that Scott Metcalfe, a former first-round draft pick of the Edmonton Oilers, died on Friday at the age of 58. The cause of death has not been publicly reported.
The NHL's Alumni Association shared the news on X:
Metcalfe was drafted 20th overall by the Oilers in the 1985 NHL Draft. Though expectations were high, his time with the franchise was brief. He took part in only two games in 1988, when the team was missing key players, including Wayne Gretzky, due to injuries.
After his short stint in Edmonton, Metcalfe was traded to the Buffalo Sabres. However, his greatest contributions came at the AHL level. He spent most of his career with the Rochester Americans, Buffalo's AHL affiliate, where he played nine seasons.
After 19 NHL games, Metcalfe also played professionally in Germany and the United Kingdom toward the end of his career.
Scott also proudly represented Team Canada at the 1987 World Junior Championships.
Former AHL teammate Jody Gage shared comments in an official statement:
"It's a terribly sad day for the organization. Scott had this larger-than-life personality about him, and it resonated with Amerks fans all over Rochester. It's easy to see why he was such a fan favorite.

He wore the red, white, and blue proudly every night, was the ultimate competitor and a consummate professional who always put his teammates and the organization first.

He did so much for the community, even well after his retirement, and to this day called Rochester his home. He was absolutely beloved in the locker room and will be truly missed. My heart goes out to his wife, Jane, and their children, Tanner, Quinn, and Keegan, and all that knew him within the local hockey community during this unimaginably difficult time."

Another former teammate, Don Stevens, added:
"Not sure what I will remember most about Metter: his jokester or serious side, his rugged hockey player side, his extremely intelligent, book-reading side, his fun-loving, friendly side, or his quiet, private side. Metter was extremely loyal to the team, his teammates, and his family."

We extend our sincerest condolences to all those affected by this tragic loss.
