A new report stated that the former Chicago Blackhawks captain Jonathan Toews could sign with a surprising team on free agency.
Despite being considered a long shot by some, the Anaheim Ducks are still very much in the race to sign the future hall of famer Jonathan Toews. According to a source close to the situation, Anaheim has maintained consistent talks with Toews' camp, and the connection to newly hired head coach Joel Quenneville may be the key to sealing the deal.
Indeed, Quenneville coached Toews during Chicago's most successful era, and the idea of reuniting could be appealing to both sides.
Here's what an NHL source revealed in an interview for RG.org:
"There's still a good chance for a Toews-'Coach Q' reunion in Anaheim. They mean business right now. Toews is just a piece of the puzzle if they can get him, but they're thinking big for sure, and that, along with Quenneville, is why they're still in this. The Ducks are still pushing for Toews. They've been talking to plenty of teams exploring trade options, and I keep hearing they will be major players in free agency. That, along with their coach, was appealing to Toews."
Toews has not played since April 13, 2023, and has reportedly
narrowed his potential return to three teams: Winnipeg, Colorado, and Anaheim. While the Jets and Avalanche may sit higher on his list, Anaheim isn't out of the running, especially as the team gears up for what could be a breakout season.
The Ducks have been near the bottom of the NHL standings for several years, but a new era may be starting. With Quenneville at the helm, a promising young roster, and aggressive moves expected this offseason, Anaheim could be one of the league's biggest surprises in 2025-26.
Toews will be looking to have an impact for a team next season:
"I'm not satisfied with the way things ended in Chicago. It's not about proving anything. It's just that there's something left in the tank, and I want to explore that. I want to go have fun, have a blast, play with passion. I want to be able to step away from the game having said that I've given it my all."
