Arvid Soderblom of the Chicago Blackhawks has improved his game so much that he has some trade value for the team, and the Edmonton Oilers could come sniffing, as GM Stan Bowman has a win-now mandate, and Stuart Skinner just isn't capable of finishing the job.
The Chicago Blackhawks' pipeline in the goal is chock-full of promising young talent, including
Drew Commesso, Stanislav Berezhnoy,
Spencer Knight, and Arvid Soderblom.
Soderblom worked with goaltender coach Jimmy Waite to improve his game, and 2024-25 showed a massive improvement, with a 3.18 GAA and .898 save percentage.
Put him behind a great team like the Oilers, and we could see both stats rise. That could end up happening as the Edmonton Oilers have been linked to the undrafted Swedish goalie whose found the Blackhawks placing trust in him over the past two seasons.
With the 25-year-old Swedish goalie filing for arbitration, it's difficult not to see him as a possible trade chip given how many goalies the Blackhawks have on the roster.
The Chicago Blackhawks Have A Good Goaltending Problem
While this suggests a problem for the Blackhawks, sometimes having enough talent to recoup assets wouldn't be a bad thing, especially in the case of Soderblom. He's earned a new contract and should be rewarded accordingly.
But where does that put the Blackhawks? With Drew Commesso and
Stanislav Berezhnoy splitting time in the AHL, and Arvid Soderblom sharing the crease with Spencer Knight, the team's #1 goalie there has to be a trade coming.
That could come in former Stanley Cup-winning goalie
Laurent Brossoit, who's been dealing with multiple injuries and surgeries, which have kept him out longer than the team has liked.
Brossoit is in year two of his two-year $3 million AAV deal and could find a home in Edmonton if the Blackhawks do intend on keeping Soderblom long-term.
In the meantime, the team has found their four goalies of the future in both the NHL and AHL.
