Edmonton Oilers and Chicago Blackhawks complete a trade today in hockey history
It was on this day in 1979 that a trade was completed between the Chicago Blackhawks and Edmonton Oilers involving Jim Harrison.
Throughout their history, the Chicago Blackhawks and Edmonton Oilers have had many players play for both franchises.
Many recognizable names who played in both a Blackhawks and Oilers sweater include
Paul Coffey, Nikolai Khabibulin, Duncan Keith, Steve Smith, and
Taylor Hall.
Another player who may not be as familiar to fans is Jim Harrison, who played for the Boston Bruins and Toronto Maple Leafs in the NHL before playing for the Oilers in 1973-74, who were at the time part of the WHA.
He began his tenure with the Blackhawks in 1976, where he played for 2 years before being shipped back to the Oilers on this day in 1979 for future considerations.
He played in a total of 324 NHL games, and had 153 points (67G, 86A).
Multiple recognizable players suited up for both Chicago and Edmonton
Perhaps the most identifiable player who played for both the Blackhawks and Oilers during his career was Hall of Fame defenseman Paul Coffey, who won multiple Stanley Cups playing with the Oilers and later the Penguins.
His time with the Blackhawks was relatively short, and he didn't make too much of an impact as he was at the tail end of his career.
Former NHL MVP Taylor Hall, who won the award while playing for the New Jersey Devils, was the 1st overall pick by the Oilers in the 2010 NHL Entry Draft, where he'd play for the 1st several years of his career.
He was traded from the Blackhawks last year to the Carolina Hurricanes, which is another team that Coffey played for.
Khabibulin was signed by the Blackhawks after helping the Tampa Bay Lightning to the Stanley Cup in 2004; he played 4 years for the Blackhawks before signing with the Oilers in 2009.
