Chicago Blackhawks acquire former member of the Toronto Maple Leafs in completed trade today in history
The former divisional foes Chicago Blackhawks and Detroit Red Wings traded with one another on this day in 1953, 72 years ago, trading Bill Brennan for Ray Hannigan.
The Detroit Red Wings and Chicago Blackhawks have made numerous deals with one another over the years dating back to the days of the Original 6.
Perhaps no trade between the two former divisional foes has been impactful as the fateful 1999 trade of former Blackhawks captain Chris Chelios to the Red Wings, a move that still makes Chicago fans cringe to this day.
On this day in 1953, the Red Wings and Blackhawks swapped Bill Brennan for Ray Hannigan:
Brennan didn't see action in the NHL, spending the majority of his career playing minor league hockey. Meanwhile, Hannigan also didn't see much action in the NHL, playing in just 3 games for the Toronto Maple Leafs.
The Red Wings re-signed Patrick Kane, a former Blackhawks icon
Fans of the Blackhawks who were hoping that 3x Stanley Cup winner Patrick Kane would return to Chicago for another year and to mentor former 2023 1st overall pick
Connor Bedard were disappointed this summer.
Kane chose to once again return to the Red Wings and play with good buddy and former Blackhawks teammate
Alex DeBrincat, signing another 1 year deal with Detroit.
He's one of many notable NHL players who have played for both sides of the rivalry, including Chelios, Martin Lapointe, Ted Lindsay, and Marian Hossa.
The Red Wings and Blackhawks will play each other twice this year in the regular season, but they'll start the pre-season against one another on September 23.
