The St. Louis Blues and Brandon Saad mutually agreed to terminate his contract yesterday, now that he's a free agent will he head to Edmonton?
Former two-time Stanley Cup winner
Brandon Saad's career hit an all-time low yesterday.
He sacrificed $5 million of his own money to become a free agent, rather than being a highly paid Springfield Thunderbird in the AHL.
While Saad isn't in his prime anymore, there's plenty of skills, including playoff experience, that he could offer an NHL team.
The Blues didn't value that experience enough to prevent waiving him, as he failed to produce as expected. After scoring 42 points in 82 games with the Blues, he took a nosedive this year, and produced 16 points (7 G, 9 A) in 43 games.
Now, it looks as if there could be a reunion between himself and his former GM Stan Bowman in Edmonton.
Oilers Inside Bob Stauffer insinuated that the team has an interest in signing the veteran free agent thanks to his ties with Bowman.
«Who does this favour? It favours teams that are tied up against the cap, okay, that are looking for useful veteran players And my guess is he's going to target a team that's cap strapped, that's got a chance to win. Who is his general manager in Chicago? Who would know him better than Stan?»
The Oilers have only $5.0 million in cap space and have to be frugal when it comes to signing talent.
This could be a huge benefit for the Oilers if they're able to sign Saad at a discount, helping them push into the postseason.
The Oilers would be an option that allows him to slot in on an NHL team that arguably still has its Stanley Cup window open.
Will Saad accept a discount to sign in Edmonton? It's difficult to believe they'll want to pay him $4.5 million to play in the bottom six.
