Analyzing the signing of Arvid Soderblom

Soderblom is 25 years old and is coming off a decent season. The stats don't necessarily show it with a .898 SV% and a 3.18 GAA with a 10-18-7 record, but he kept the Blackhawks in a lot of games.

He also improved a lot from the season before, showing potential to be the future backup now that Spencer Knight was thrown in the mix after the Seth Jones trade and will ultimately be the starter.

However, coming after his first «breakout» season, and with the gaggle of goaltenders the Hawks have, this can be classified as an overpay. For instance, Knight is 24, but is much further ahead. 25 years old could be too little too late for Soderblom.

$2.75 million per year is a lot for a guy like Soderblom, and hopefully it doesn't bite them when trying to make an acquisition or trying to re-sign a key piece. Luckily, the Hawks still have $20 million to work with in cap space. He should be getting $1.5 to $2 million, maximum.

The Blackhawks have Knight, Soderblom, Drew Commesso, Adam Gajan, and Laurent Broissot has still yet to be found.

Where will Broissot fall in all of this? Chicago might've been better off just trading Soderblom, making Broissot the backup, and leaving Commesso in Rockford for one more year. Soderblom might affect a Commesso call up with this two-year contract.

Hopefully, Soderblom continues to improve and make the $2.75 million look like a steal, but as of right now, it seems like a little too much.
