A major shootout controversy between the Chicago Blackhawks and Montreal Canadiens erupts the Bell Centre
After 60 minutes of back and forth hockey and a full overtime period of exciting 3 on 3 play, it still wasn't enough.
A shootout was needed, and Canadiens fans are now left furious after it because a controversy took place.
The Chicago Blackhawks first shooter up in the shootout was rookie
Frank Nazar, whose attempt was ruled no goal.
He even skated to the bench and celebrated, but his teammates alongside NHL officials who deemed it no goal were left confused.
Officials who were watching closely must have thought that the puck vanished into thin air, and the Canadiens sent out
Patrik Laine as their next shooter.
After Laine's attempt the controversy began, when the Chicago bench looked at the IPads and noticed Nazar's shot actually went into the net.
The referees deemed it a good goal, and the Bell Centre erupted.
Keep in mind that a Canadiens win against the Blackhawks would've punched their ticket to the 2025 Stanley Cup Playoffs, and if they were aware that they were already down in the shootout, they may have decided to send somebody else out instead of Patrik Laine.
Elliotte Friedman addressed what really went on, and according to his report, the NHL review room in Toronto notified the scorekeeper in the penalty box that it was indeed a good goal, but Laine went on the ice before it could be told.
The Canadiens are now facing the pressure of
the Columbus Blue Jackets, who sit just four points back of them, and both teams have two games remaining.
