Right around midnight on Thursday, the Buffalo Sabres traded JJ Peterka to the Utah Mammoth in exchange for Josh Doan and Michael Kesselring.

The "low price" came as a shock to Chicago Blackhawks fans, and they wondered why they didn't get him.
Greg Boysen made a tweet earlier that is correct, and that's the fact that a Michael Kesselring equals a Artyom Levshunov or a Sam Rinzel, and added in, Doan equals Frank Nazar.
All three of those players are valued way more to be thrown into a Peterka trade, and all three are most likely on an untouchables list.
So, the Sabres were keen on getting a right-shot that could pair with Owen Power on the left side.
Outside of Levshunov and Rinzel, the best one the Blackhawks have is Connor Murphy.
The thing is, Murphy doesn't fit Buffalo's timeline. Murphy is 32 years old, and Kesselring, who was a part of the trade, is 25; that's a seven-year gap. Looking down the road, Murphy will gain more traction at the trade deadline when a desperate contender comes lurking for a right-handed defender.
Plus, the only forward who matches Doan is Nazar.
You could make the argument for Colton Dach, but in other organizations' eyes, is he really on that level yet? Because that's all that matters at the end of the day when you're trying to complete a trade.
It also seems as if Buffalo wasn't interested in any picks and wanted young, NHL-ready players. Meaning that if Chicago even offered the third overall pick, that wouldn't do anything.
That most likely took Kyle Davidson to the next problem, and that's the fact that outside of picks, you don't have a lot of expendable assets that will make Buffalo stop and take a look.
With all that being said, that doesn't mean Peterka is a bad player by any means, and it might be the best thing Kyle Davidson has done in his time in the Windy City if he landed him. 68 points as a 23-year-old and not carrying too much baggage with a $7.7 million AAV contract over the next five years for the Mammoth.
Peterka is awesome on the offensive side of things and will be a valuable asset to Utah's power play.
The problem was the Blackhawks had nothing the Sabres were looking for. And if Kyle and his team tried to make it work, they'd end up paying way too much. This is just another thing that's going to be a tough pill to swallow, but in the end, the reasoning behind it is valid, and in a few days, Hawks fans should look back and understand why it didn't happen once the emotional reaction phase is over.
