Three-time Stanley Cup Champion officially becomes free agent amidst firing
Mark Recchi, a three-time Stanley Cup winner and Hall of Famer, has been let go from his coaching job with the Columbus Blue Jackets.
This decision comes just as the new NHL season is about to start.
Recchi joined the Blue Jackets as an assistant coach last season during a difficult time after former coach Mike Babcock left.
Despite having a year left on his contract, Recchi was told he wouldn't be coming back for the 2024-25 season.
This news was first shared by Aaron Portzline of The Athletic on social media Tuesday.
They finished with a record of 27-43-12, putting them last in the Metropolitan Division.
"Assistant coach Mark Recchi has been informed he will not be back with #CBJ next season.
That's a rough ride for an NHL Hall of Famer w 3 Stanley Cup rings - fired after only one season after joining the franchise last Sept mid-training camp following the Babcock debacle." Portzline said.
He added, "Recchi had one year remaining on his contract w #CBJ. The club has not announced his replacement on Dean Evason's staff."
Recchi is now without a team just as the season is about to start, and it's unclear who will take over his role.
It will be interesting to see where he ends up next as he looks for a new position in the NHL.
