Game 1 of the AHL's Calder Cup Final ended in controversy after a would-be goal from the Charlotte Checkers was waived off for the most bizarre of reasons.

The Charlotte Checkers and the Abbotsford Canucks, the AHL affiliates of the Florida Panthers and Vancouver Canucks, have advanced to the Calder Cup Final.
And it appeared as though Charlotte grabbed a 1-0 series lead in overtime, only to have their would-be OT GWG waived off due to the most bizarre of reasons.
Canucks center Ty Mueller won a face-off in his defensive zone so cleanly that the puck went straight into the net and behind Canucks goaltender Arturs Silovs, who had just turned around to start paying attention to the play.
While Checkers players and their fans celebrated, the officials immediately conferred with one another and eventually waived the goal off, ruling that Silovs wasn't ready for the play to begin.
Ironically, the Canucks would score soon afterward themselves and they now lead the Calder Cup Final 1-0.
While Checkers head coach Gordie Kinnear was understandably disappointed by the result, he didn't lay into the officials for their controversial ruling.
Just that the goalie wasn't set, wasn't ready for the faceoff. A bit old school, but the centreman's ready to take the faceoff, his job is to make sure everybody is ready before he gets his head over the circle. It is what it is. It's playoff hockey, there are going to be mistakes both ways.

Yeah, I thought it was a goal, and then all of a sudden there was hesitation from the refs. Credit to (the refs). They got together and they made the call. Again, I just see it as the centreman's responsible for making sure everyone on his team is ready. It looked like he was ready to play.

Game 2 between the Checkers and Canucks will be played on Sunday.
