Chicago Blackhawks ink NHL veteran defenseman to one-year deal after successful PTO

The Chicago Blackhawks have signed an NHL veteran defenseman to a one-year deal after a convincing training camp.
Matt Grzelcyk, who joined the Chicago Blackhawks toward the end of the offseason on a professional tryout, has agreed to sign a one-year standard player contract with the organization valued at $1M.

The Blackhawks are expected to make their final roster cuts in the coming days. There were many interesting lineup battles to follow in Chicago, and management found an answer in Matt Grzelcyk during camp.
After Friday night's 3-2 loss against the Minnesota Wild, the Blackhawks head coach Jeff Blashill had great words to say about the veteran:
"I thought Gryz played well. He's a solid player, he's smart, he moves the puck pretty well. He can kind of play in a lot of different situations. I thought he played well."
Before that game, Grzelcyk didn't know what would happen concerning his contractual situation:
"Not really, just prepared to play maybe two games this weekend. Let the chips fall where they may. Control what I can control, just go out there and focus on having a good game tonight and see what happens. I haven't really had any discussions. It's been kind of good, just worry about playing, not worry about what's going on outside that. I think this summer was obviously pretty stressful, just trying to treat it as your normal camp and put a good effort forward and see what happens."
After all, the Hawks had very little experience on the blue line entering the season, and acquiring him made sense on all fronts for the team.
The 31-year-old veteran tallied 40 points in 82 games last season with the Pittsburgh Penguins.
