During the middle of the last Stanley Cup playoff series Gary Bettman and the NHL made a huge announcement.
The NHL made leaps and strides as it's viewership of this years Stanley Cup playoffs, increased to the most since 1996.
This increase also brought in an interesting statistic in the fold, as more Americans watched the playoffs this year as well. Accounting for the last 5 years, 2024 was the most watched.
Bettman somehow managed to succeeed despite, the regular season Blackouts:
«The 2024 playoffs are the three most-watched rounds in the United States since 1996, while the 2024 conference finals saw a 34% increase on a year-over-year basis in North America. » - NHL
This will undoubtedly put him into a good position with ownership, as he's helped increase their profits.
Ultimately however, during all of this Bettman could consider adding another Canadian team to the league, while expansion is still ongoing. Perhaps Quebec? Maybe Hamilton?
With that in mind, we should realize that Bettman's ultimate coup is that Hockey is growing in popularity with the citizens of the United States.
But we already knew how popular hockey is in cities like Chicago.
It may be sometime before we see another NHL team in Canada, as Bettman has consistently prioritized American cities like Atlanta, Houston, Utah and Arizona once again.
