The Utah Mammoth Are Already in Trouble For Their New Trademark Name and Logo
The Utah Mammoth, formerly known as the "Hockey Club, as the Smith Entertainment Group will have to contend with the National Lacrosse League's Colorado Mammoth for the trademark.
Today, the
Utah Hockey Club dropped the moniker in favor of their new brand name: the "Mammoth".
The name is the team's permanent name, and this was settled after 850K votes, all fan-driven, decided on the prehistoric mammal to represent Utah's newest sports team.
In order to stay fresh in NHL fans' minds, they offered some facts regarding the prehistoric mammal that has been found in North America.
«Evidence suggests mammoths charged in herds at speeds exceeding 25 miles per hour, comparable to the speeds reached by the fastest skaters in the NHL,» the team said in its release.
The team would share a video celebrating the announcement after a 13-month deliberation, Mammoth is what the Utah franchise will be known as, dropping the "Hockey Club" for good. This is nearly a year after SEG bought the Arizona Coyotes and relocated them to Utah.
However, the struggles have just begun for Ryan Smith and the Smith Entertainment Group, who own the "Mammoth".
Spirits may be dampened today, as fans quickly found another sports team that shares the "Mammoth" designation. In the National Lacrosse League, there is the Colorado Mammoth.
Along with the "Tusks Up" the
Utah franchise has been using, they share similarities in more ways the one.
«Tusks Up» is the team-endorsed rallying cry for Mammoth fans, very similar to what the Colorado team has been using.
This is only so soon after their controversial 2024 Qualtrics Poll, which included 20 choices of a name. It'd be narrowed down to six, and in June, they'd be able to choose from the Outlaws, Venom, Yeti, Blizzard, Mammoth, and HC. Yeti would be claimed by the drinkware company and was blocked from utilizing that name due to possible confusion with the highly popular drinkware.
After June, only three would remain as fans once again put in a vote in January for either the Hockey Club, Wasatch, or Mammoth.
Now, the team may have to find a way to save themselves once again, this time from another sports organization in Colorado.
