We all had the satisfaction of the first purchase of material goods with our paychecks. Do you ever wonder what professional athletes do with theirs?

NHL enforcer, and one of the most hated personalities in the league, Sean Avery made an illicit purchase, with his first NHL paycheck.

Which you would think, is odd considering the standard answer is, a car, or paying off their parent's house and helping people in general.

But Avery went another route:

Avery of course, brash and outspoken wasn't shy in his answer, as he bought an ounce of mushrooms. A psychedelic substance, now in experimental use for other treatments. Still considered illegal, however.

It's likely that he doesn't care how he is perceived given how he acted while still in the NHL.

Avery, 44, is now retired and began his NHL career in 2001-2002 with the Detroit Red Wings. He played 580 total NHL games, scoring 247 points( 90 G, 157 A), and was a huge pest on the ice, to the dismay of many goalies in the league including Martin Brodeur.

Sean Avery is infamous for the league instituting the "Avery Rule" as in 2008, he turned around to face Brodeur and blocked his view by moving his stick in front of Brodeur's face causing a Rangers goal.

The NHL quickly shut that down the next day, implementing a rule against any sort of play of that nature, resulting in a minor, 2-minute penalty.
