Ex-Canadiens, Leafs, Blackhawks, Rangers and Penguins Legend Al MacNeil passes away at age 89

We regret to inform you that Al MacNeil, a four-time Stanley Cup Champion, has passed away at the age of 89.

MacNeil wasn't just a four-time cup champ with his skates on, he was the bench boss for the Calgary Flames when he won the Stanley cup- just one of his four won.

«Al was a great man who will be dearly missed by our organization,» said Calgary Sports and Entertainment Corporation Chairman Murray Edwards. «He was a long-term loyal member of our Flames family ever since the team's arrival in Calgary in 1980. He played, coached, and managed in both the NHL and AHL, and had ultimate success while doing so. We send our heartfelt condolences to his wife Norma, son Allister, daughter Allison, son-in-law Paul Sparkes and grandsons Jack and Ben.»

Al MacNeil laced up the skates for the Blackhawks, Leafs, Canadiens, Rangers and Penguins throughout his 524-NHL game tenure.

We are deeply saddened to announce the passing of long-time Flames executive and former head coach Al MacNeil.

Al passed away at the age of 89 years, on Jan. 5, 2025, surrounded by his family in Calgary
