A reporter from an NHL reporter, Derek O'Brien of The Hockey News, Vancouver Canucks star forward Elias Pettersson has fallen victim to a real estate scam worth over $250,000 USD.
The 26-year old Swedish born star was set to buy a home, advertised as a "luxury villa" in Danderyd, Sweden.
The purchase was for $26 million Swedish Crowns (Roughly $2.4 million USD), Pettersson paid a 10% down payment to secure the purchase, however, it was soon realized by the Pettersson's (Elias and his father, Torbjorn) that it was a huge mistake.
«It turned out that the house had many flaws that needed to be fixed,» Torbjörn Pettersson told Sundsvalls Tidning newspaper.
Elias and his father sued the real estate broker who was responsible for the deal, and thankfully they were able to have the mortgage canceled. Unfortunately, they were unable to recoup their $240,000 USD down payment.
The broker, who helped the Pettersson's, is now reportedly in prison on a six-year sentence for fraud charges outside of Elias' case, which makes their 10% down payment refund a lost cause.
«The money's gone - just forget about it and move on," Elias Pettersson's father stated.
The $240,000 USD will not affect the pockets of the $11.6 million yearly salaried Canucks star, Pettersson, but it surely isn't sitting well with the Swedish family.
