The 2024 trade acquisition of Ilya Mikheyev from the Vancouver Canucks is paying off for the Chicago Blackhawks and Connor Bedard, who got some much-needed help up front.
The Chicago Blackhawks are back over the .500 mark thanks to their recent wins, including an exciting OT win over the Anaheim Ducks and former head coach Joel Quenneville at the United Center.
The good news for the Blackhawks is that they're getting help from all across the roster, including from Ilya Mikheyev, who is playing in his 2nd year with the Blackhawks after being acquired before last season from the Vancouver Canucks.
So far this year, Mikheyev has 4 points (3G, 1A) and is building on last season, during which he scored 20 goals, coming within a single goal of matching his previous career-best of 21 set with the Toronto Maple Leafs in 2020-21.
Ilya Mikheyev has given Connor Bedard and the Blackhawks a boost
Mikheyev was never drafted into the NHL but signed a 1-year entry-level contract with the Maple Leafs in 2019 after playing with Avangard Omsk in the KHL in his native Russia.
He would play the 1st several years of his NHL career in a Maple Leafs sweater before signing a 4-year contract with the Canucks in 2022.
After 2 years with the Canucks in which he scored a total of 24 goals,
he was traded with
Sam Lafferty and a 2nd round pick in the 2027 NHL Entry Draft to the Blackhawks for a 4th round pick in the 2027 NHL Entry Draft.
So far in his NHL career with the Maple Leafs, Canucks, and Blackhawks, Mikheyev has 169 points (83G, 86A).
He's currently tied for the team lead in goals for the Blackhawks with
Frank Nazar, who was recently signed to a 7-year contract as a major show of faith in his future potential by Chicago management.
He's also helping take some of the burden off Connor Bedard, the face of the franchise.
