Gary Bettman Addresses Plan Change For All-Star Game and Retirement
Gary Bettman had addressed two major events in the National Hockey League at a recent board meeting with reporters revealing his comments on potential retirement and the NHL All-Star game next year
In January, we
reported that NHL commissioner Gary Bettman told the league he might retire «in a couple years.»
Two months later, the 72-year old league-head has addressed it once again, alongside the All-Star Game.
Since taking over in 1993, Bettman has added eight new teams, growing the league from 24 to 32, including places like Las Vegas that aren't typical hockey spots.
Today, the NHL makes $7 billion a year, and each team is worth billions, while Bettman is laughing.
This week, after a meeting with team managers on Wednesday, reporter Pierre LeBrun asked Bettman about his retirement plans. Bettman didn't give a clear answer.
Instead, Bettman joked with LeBrun, stating:
«You keep trying to push me out. Not happening. I might stick around longer than you!»
Fans aren't laughing alongside Bettman, though. They want to know when Bettman will actually leave and as not many are fond of him.
After more than 30 years in charge, Bettman has hinted he won't stay forever. Earlier this year, Minnesota Wild owner Craig Leipold said the NHL has started looking for a new leader, according to
HockeyFeed.
A group of league officials is working on finding someone to replace Bettman.
But Bettman isn't rushing out the door, and he has new plans for the NHL's
All-Star Weekend.
"We're reevaluating how we want to do things because I think we've raised the bar about as high as you can for an All-Star Game in any sport," NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman said near the conclusion of the general managers' annual three-day meeting. "We want to make sure whatever we do is up to the standards that we've created."
Bettman than revealed why they may not condone another All-Star Game, and it appears that the 4-Nations FaceOff tournament changed everything, and likely benefited their pockets big time, with record-breaking viewership ratings.
"That particularly elevated after the 4 Nations," Bettman said.
