Former Chicago Blackhawks defenseman Adam Clendening wasn't able to find a new home in the NHL and has joined former Winnipeg Jets forward Alexander Burmistrov in the KHL by signing with the Shanghai Dragons.
The team announced the signings on X while also announcing the signing of goaltender Andrei Tikhomirov, Vladimir Kuznetsov, and Borna Rendulic.
Dragons GM Igor Varitsky said that Clendening's valuable NHL experience
will pay off for his team, while also saying he expects him to play important roles on the power play and penalty kill.
Adam Clendening brings valuable NHL experience and plays an important role both defensively and on the power play. We consider him one of our leaders, and last season he showed he has the ability to guide his teammates on and off the ice.
Clendening was taken by the Blackhawks with the 36th overall pick in the 2011 NHL Entry Draft, but he spent the majority of his time in the organization playing for the AHL affiliate Rockford Ice Hogs.
He had stints with several other NHL teams, including the Pittsburgh Penguins, Anaheim Ducks, Edmonton Oilers, New York Rangers, Arizona Coyotes, Columbus Blue Jackets, and Philadelphia Flyers.
He has 24 points (4G, 20A) in 90 NHL games.
The Blackhawks made a major change in goal this year, trading away
Petr Mrazek to the former divisional foe Detroit Red Wings while also acquiring
Spencer Knight from the Panthers.
They also re-signed RFA goalie Arvid Soderblom, who won 10 games for the Blackhawks this year, to a new contract.
They're going into this year with the tandem of Knight and Soderblom.
