The Boston Bruins have announced a roster move on Thursday, moments before their highly anticipated game against the New York Islanders, placing former 11th overall Oliver Wahlstrom on waivers
Oddly enough, as Wahlstrom was plotting on revenge tonight against the team who drafted him, the New York Islanders, the Bruins ruined the fun and have placed him on waivers.
The Bruins have been going through offensive struggles, and find themselves outside of the playoffs for the first time in many years.
In 2018, Wahlstrom had quite the high ceiling as a projected top-6 NHL forward, the New York Islanders selected him that year with their first-round, 11th overall draft selection after an impressive showing with the United States' NTDP [National Team Development Program].
Perhaps Wahlstrom's decision to join the Islanders organization after only spending one year at Boston College playing hockey was the wrong one, as he has not once lived up to the hype of being an NHL first round draft pick.
The Bruins decided to take a chance on Wahlstrom, a native of Portland, Maine, just one hour outside of Boston, but his time appears over.
Could the Blackhawks take a chance on Wahlstrom?
Wahlstrom could use a fresh slate of opportunity, and there is truly no better place than the bottom-dwelling Blackhawks, who could provide Wahlstrom top line minutes in hopes to spark his game.
With the Blackhawks reportedly separating from several assets at this years' NHL trade deadline on March 7, such as
Ryan Donato and
Tyler Bertuzzi, Wahlstrom could certainly serve as a filler once they are traded away.
Wahlstrom has a very cap-friendly deal, with only 1 year remaining with a hit of $1M salary.
