There was a huge move GM Kyle Davidson made in an attempt to acquire the 4th overall pick in the 2024 NHL Entry Draft.

It was reported by NHL Insider Pierre LeBrun that GM Kyle Davidson and the Chicago Blackhawks made a big offer to acquire the 4th overall pick.

«It could have been a fireworks show at the start of the 2024 draft. I'm told the Blackhawks offered next year's first pick, unprotected, plus another pick, in exchange for the fourth overall pick.

I think it was pretty close, but the Blue Jackets turned it down. They really like Cayden Lindstrom and couldn't turn him down.»

- Pierre LeBrun

Kyle was unable to secure the 4th overall pick from the Columbus Blue Jackets, as they coveted Cayden Lindstrom.

But they would make the same offer to Kent Hughes and the Montreal Canadiens, as they really were after Ivan Demidov.

The biggest part of the trade was it was an unprotected pick, which would've been a 1st or 2nd overall in the 2025 NHL draft.

Despite it all, the Blackhawks were unable to draft both Levshunov and Demidov in the same draft, though Kyle Davidson tried his best.

"Wow, that would have really given me pause if I were Columbus. The Blackhawks will most likely be a lottery team again next year, not out of the question they'll be drafting with the 1st overall pick in 2025."

- NHL Watcher

It worked out well for the Canadiens who would draft, Demidov who is considered a generational talent. But for the Blackhawks, they still had a successful draft, securing the best defenseman available.

To be honest, if I was in Hughes's shoes, I'm not sure I'd have made any different choice.
