Chicago Blackhawks and Carolina Hurricanes combine for draft blockbuster trade involving a first-round pick
General manager Kyle Davidson held picks #3 and #25 heading into the NHL draft in Los Angeles on Friday, and ultimately ended up landing the No. 29 overall selection as well.
In a deal with the Hurricanes, the Blackhawks dealt picks 34 and 62 in this year's draft in exchange for pick 29 from Carolina, all to select one specific forward that is a very rare breed.
Chicago Blackhawks select Mason West 29th overall in Round 1 of the draft
The Blackhawks selected 6-foot-6 forward Mason West with their last pick in Round 1, which was acquired from the Hurricanes. The towering 17-year old player is a multi-sport athlete, a football quarterback, and received offers to play Division 1, but his top passion remains on the ice.
Through 91 career games at the high school level in his three seasons, West tallied up 114 points, including 51 goals and 63 assists.
"Beyond his imposing frame, West is a fluid skater with effortless extension, and the reach and skill combination to make high-level plays. A natural shooter, he loads his shots from the hip, using upper-body torque and frame transfer to generate power."
