BREAKING: Atlanta Set to Get Another NHL Team? Under One Condition
In recent discussions about the future of the Coyotes, various cities have emerged as potential relocation destinations, including Houston, Salt Lake City, and Kansas City. However, one city that has flown somewhat under the radar is Atlanta.
According to trusted insider Elliotte Friedman, the NHL is seriously considering the Atlanta area as a possible new home for the Coyotes. The proposed location for their arena would be in Alpharetta, a small city just outside of Atlanta.
Elliotte on NHL expansion or relocation:
There's a lot of momentum for Atlanta. The word here is if that rink can be built in Alpharetta. That is very real.
While this would not bring back the Atlanta Thrashers, it would bring NHL hockey back to the state of Georgia. Atlanta has had two failed attempts at sustaining an NHL team in the past. The Atlanta Flames moved to Calgary, while the Thrashers relocated to Winnipeg and became the Jets. Despite Atlanta losing its team to Arizona, the NHL sees potential in the city.
Critics argue that instead of placing a third NHL team in the Atlanta suburb of Alpharetta, the league should focus on building a stadium in the city itself. By directly engaging with the diverse population of Atlanta, the NHL has the opportunity to grow the game in a way they have expressed interest in for years but have yet to fully realize.
