The Chicago Blackhawks capitalize off the Winnipeg Jets and announced a huge free agency signing
The Chicago Blackhawks and GM Kyle Davidson announced a free agency signing of former Winnipeg Jets forward Dominic Toninato and it's huge.
Literally! The 31-year-old forward is not easy to knock off the puck and towers over his opponents, using his size to his advantage.
Toninato will earn an $850K, two-year, two-way deal. Toninato's last deal paid him $775K over the last two seasons in Winnipeg.
This season, he played the majority of the year in the AHL with the Manitoba Moose, playing 60 games, and scoring 36 points (18-18) with 81 PIMs.
It's difficult to see this anymore than a signing to restock the veteran depth available in Rockford.
Which is fine, if you know what to expect when free agency signings like this occur. Toninato's time in the NHL has been limited, and he's only played a total of 189 games in the NHL, scoring a total of 35 points (13-22).
While he's become quite the journeyman, playing for the Colorado Avalanche, Florida Panthers, and their AHL affiliates in San Antonio, Springfield, and Colorado along the way.
He brings a veteran presence in the locker room and will be a leader in Rockford, undoubtedly.
This signing won't win the Blackhawks a cup, and after an underwhelming free agency by Kyle Davidson, it seems like this is a nothingburger in the greater scheme of things.
Toninato will likely serve as a call-up in case of injuries, like we've seen with players like Zach Sanford in the past.
It's not hard to relate to that feeling, but in all honesty, the AHL team needs talent, too.
