Substantial trade completed between the Buffalo Sabres and Chicago Blackhawks today in hockey history
A trade involving the legendary goaltender Dominik Hasek was completed between the Buffalo Sabres and the Chicago Blackhawks on this day in hockey history.
Exactly 33 years ago today, on August 7, 1992, the Chicago Blackhawks traded
Dominik Hasek to the Buffalo Sabres in exchange for goalie Stephane Beauregard and a fourth-round pick.
Trading away Hasek was definitely part of the bad.
Revisiting The Hasek Trade Between The Chicago Blackhawks And The Buffalo Sabres
At the time, Hasek was stuck behind
Ed Belfour on the depth chart and had played only 25 NHL games over two seasons.
The Blackhawks' decision was understandable. Belfour had just won the Vezina and Calder. But Hasek would go on to win six Vezina Trophies, two Hart Trophies, and lead the NHL in save percentage for six straight seasons.
He also won two Stanley Cups later in his career, both with the Detroit Red Wings.
The weight of Hasek's loss is immeasurable, especially considering what the Hawks got in return.
Goaltender Stephane Beauregard didn't exactly have a standout NHL career, retiring from the league at only 26 years old. He never played a game for the Hawks, and eventually joined the Winnipeg Jets and the Philadelphia Flyers.
As for Eric Daze, he took part in 601 games for the Blackhawks between 1994 and 2006, scoring 398 points, including 226 goals in his career.
That trade can still be seen as one of the worst deals of all time for the Hawks, while the Sabres ended up getting a legendary Hall of Famer who would lead the team for nearly a decade.
