BREAKING NEWS - The NHL Salary Cap is Going up and we now know by how much
BY RYAN HOLLINGSWORTH
This led the NHL to flatten the salary cap for several years forward which has caused all kinds of havoc for general managers trying to make trades and signing their stars. In this year's trade deadline, for example, teams were bankrolling other teams for draft picks to make trades work because so many teams or pushed up against the salary cap.
According to Elliotte Friedman, with the GM's meetings concluded in Florida, it appears that the cap will only go up by $1,000,000 next season however, the commissioner feels he can leave the window open to raising it higher.
Chris Johnson also reports the same, however, the NHL needs to see what the incoming executive director of the NHLPA Marty Walsh wants to do.
I do feel that the salary cap needs to start going up as teams continue to get squeezed and lose players due to extremely high salaries and teams that can't re-sign them.
The current upper limit of the NHL cap is $82.5 million. Currently, 16 teams are over the salary cap but remain cap compliant due to long-term injury reserve players they've acquired from other teams to give them relief.
