Sports World Loses Longtime Legendary Broadcaster At The Age of 78

Earlier today, it was announced that the sports world lost a legendary sports broadcaster in Greg Gumbel who passed away at the age of 78 after battling cancer.
Gumbel who worked for CBS began his tenure with the network back in 1989. CBS Sports released a statement on his passing from the Gumbel family.
It is with profound sadness that we share the passing of our beloved husband and father, Greg Gumbel," Gumbel's wife Marcy and daughter Michelle announced in a statement to CBS Sports, where Gumbel has served as a broadcaster for decades.
"He passed away peacefully surrounded by much love after a courageous battle with cancer. Greg approached his illness like one would expect he would, with stoicism, grace, and positivity."
Gumbel's family continued: "He leaves behind a legacy of love, inspiration and dedication to over 50 extraordinary years in the sports broadcast industry; and his iconic voice will never be forgotten. Greg's memory will forever be treasured by his family, dearest friends, colleagues and all who loved him."
Gumbel was well known for his NFL play by play coverage along with college basketball through the NCAA tournament.
He also became famous as he was the first black play by play announcer for a major
championship when he called Super Bowl XXXV between the Baltimore Ravens and the New York Giants.
The outpouring has been tremendous throughout the web as all sports networks an many fans across the world send their sympathies and condolences to the Gumbel family.
He is survived by his brother Bryant Gumbel who also is well known in sportscasting and worked for NBC.
We would like to extend our sympathies and condolences to the Gumbel family as they work through this tough time.
