"It's been a weird offseason for unsigned rookies and players overseas because of the pandemic. Regular dates were thrown out the window for most scenarios however one date stood firm and that was for expiring rights rookies to sign their entry level contracts or teams would lose their rights. One player who became a free agent after that scenario is defenseman Wyatt Kalynuk who was drafted by the Philadelphia Flyers in the seventh round of the 2017 NHL Draft. Kalynuk played three seasons at the University of Wisconsin where he registered 78 points in 110 games. After not coming to an agreement with the Flyers, Kalynuk signed an entry level deal with the Chicago Blackhawks according to Mark Lazerus of The Athletic. Lazerus adds that some college scouts have compared him to former Blackhawk Nick Leddy. «At this point, Wyatt thinks right now it's better for him to turn pro, and I support that,» Wisconsin coach Tony Granato told the Wisconsin State Journal. «As much as we'd like to have him back here, part of college hockey and part of recruiting great players is the fact that you understand that, unfortunately, sometimes they are ready before their four years expire.»
