The Chicago Blackhawks have a chance to pick up some additional depth as a pair of defensemen were placed on waivers by the San Jose Sharks on Sunday.
Having additional depth on the blue line is never a bad thing, and the Chicago Blackhawks have the chance to add some after the San Jose Sharks placed 2 defenseman up for grabs on the waiver wire, including someone with former ties to the Blackhawks.
Both Lucas Carlsson and Jack Thompson are on waivers, and they have 24 hours to be claimed by any one of the 31 other NHL teams or otherwise clear and be sent to the American Hockey League.
Lucas Carlsson & Jack Thompson (both SJ) on waivers today.
Can the Blackhawks add some defensive depth with a waiver claim?
Neither Carlsson nor Thompson is a major name yet at the NHL level, but there is still time left in their NHL careers.
Carlsson actually has ties to the Blackhawks, who took him with the 110th overall pick in the 2016 NHL Entry Draft.
In 2020-21, he was traded with Lucas Wallmark to the Florida Panthers for Brett Connolly, Riley Stillman, Henrik Borgstrom, and a 7th round pick in the 2021 NHL Entry Draft.
He then signed a 2 year, 2 way contract with the Sharks last summer. He has 15 points (4G, 11A) in 73 games.
Thompson was taken with the 93rd pick in the 2020 NHL Entry Draft by the Tampa Bay Lightning, but was traded in 2024 to the Sharks for forward Anthony Duclair.
