71 Years Ago Today: Chicago Blackhawks Acquire Center From The Boston Bruins
71 years ago today, George "Red" Sullivan was acquired by the Chicago Blackhawks from the Boston Bruins in return for cash:
Sullivan began his career with the Bruins, where he spent four years. Then, he was traded to Chicago, where he played for two seasons, before going to the New York Rangers for the end of his playing career.
During his two years in Chicago, Sullivan led the Hawks in points before being traded to the Rangers.
He appeared in five All-Star games, and was even named captain of the Rangers in 1957.
He retired in 1961 after 556 NHL games, in which he scored 107 goals and 239 assists.
Later, he became coach of the New York Rangers for five years, then went on to join the Pittsburgh Penguins coaching staff in their inaugural season. Two years after, he was hired by the Washington Capitals, who replaced him in the same season.
Sullivan passed away in 2019 after a long battle with Alzheimer's.
It's important to remember what went down in the Wings franchise as we get closer to the start of their
Centennial season.
