Brent Sopel wasn't the most skilled player on the ice during his career, but after embracing his role in the bottom six, became a quality piece for the Blackhawks 2010 Stanley Cup run. Sopel only had 8 points during the regular season and 6 points in the playoffs. Sopel had 50 hits and 120 blocks in the regular season with his gritty style of play that allowed the Blackhawks stars to shine.
Sopel fought the demons of addition and came out on top and with a new burning passion for his life after hockey. Sopel launched the "Why Program", which is a mental health initiative that focuses on helping young hockey players in Chicago communities.
The Why Initiative teaches kids and teens the importance of being mentally strong, mental health awareness, and boosting self-esteem. Sopel is doing great things with this initiative and stated that he feels that he found his passion. It is great to see Sopel happy and healthy in life after hockey, giving back to the community to help mold the next generation of players.
