When people hit the ice to play hockey, it's meant to be fun. Yes hockey can be dangerous and injuries do happen, but you never think that it could take a player's life.
Unfortunately it does happen and for the poor family of 16 year-old Teddy Balkind, they had to live through that nightmare. Balkind died one year ago today after a tragic accident at the rink. Balkind was playing for St Luke's high-school when a player on the opposing team would catch Balkind in the neck with his skate blade.
The game was stopped, coaches and staff would try to tend to Balkind until the paramedics arrived. Balkind would ultimately end up passing away at hospital after the doctors and nurses did everything possible.
After his death the hockey community around the world would all pay tribute to the young player, by posting a hockey stick outside our homes. Altough it's been one year since it happened, I can't imagine things got any easier for the family.
I just wanted to take a moment on behalf of Hawks Insider and give our sincerest condolences to the Teddy Balkind family, may your son rest in peace.
