Before the draft, when the Blackhawks drafted Connor Bedard first overall at the end of June, it was well-known that many felt Bedard's size could be a hindrance for him early in his career.
Although his skill level is exceptional, and there's no denying that he will be the best player in the league at some point in the future, at present, his size has proven to be a bit too small.
His sample size is quite small, but it's clear that he is having a tough time adjusting to playing against larger opponents, especially in the corners and along the faceoff circle. Time and time again, he would get beaten cleanly in face-offs due to the physical overmatching by his opponents.
There's a good chance that he is not finished maturing as a young adult, as he is only 18 years old. Many NHL players, after their first season, will bulk up in strength, grow several inches, and become more dynamic in the league.
I expect this to happen to Bedard, and with the skill set he has, he will be one of the more dangerous centers in the league shortly.
