The wait is over for the Ottawa Senators fan base and management as the organization completed a trade this evening. The Senators have traded Alex DeBrincat to the Detroit Red Wings in exchange for Dominic Kubalik, prospect Donovan Subrango, along with a conditional first-round and fourth-round pick in 2024.

This trade has been in the works for some time, as the Senators have been actively seeking a trading partner to facilitate DeBrincat's move. Just before the season concluded, DeBrincat informed the Senators that he had no intention of signing a long-term contract with the team.
Being a restricted free agent with arbitration rights, he was eligible for a salary of around $9 to $10 million for a one-season contract.
With this trade, the Senators have acquired valuable assets that will benefit them in the future, while also securing a right winger who can contribute immediately. Following the completion of the trade, DeBrincat signed a four-year extension with the Detroit Red Wings, which carries an average annual salary of $7.87 million.
Frank Seravalli tweeted out the details of DeBrincat's new deal.
Considering DeBrincat's status as a 40-goal scorer, this contract seems fair for both the Red Wings and DeBrincat himself. He is taking a gamble on his performance, aiming to improve his stats and potentially secure an even more lucrative deal in four years. This approach is becoming increasingly common among NHL stars, given the anticipated rise in the salary cap in the upcoming seasons.
Ian Mendes also shared DeBrincat's response and statement from The Athletic during his time in Ottawa.
The Senators did their best to salvage a challenging situation, and DeBrincat has secured a substantial $31 million contract for the next four years with a team on the rise, poised to become a playoff contender soon.
