Chicago Blackhawks 2023 Trade Deadline Recap

Kyle Davidson was a busy man the past couple weeks with the trade deadline looming. Well, not that it's done, we can finally break down the trades he made.

Davidson made a total of 9 trades, certainly earning his paycheck. He acquired Anders Bjork, Nikita Zaitsev, a 2022 2nd round pick, a 2024 fourth round pick, and Austin Wagner all for «future considerations.» Now, these future considerations almost never happen, so Chicago pretty much got that all for free. Tidy work from Kyle.

1/3: The Blackhawks traded Jake McCabe (50% retained salary), Sam Lafferty, 2024 5th round pick, and 2025 5th round pick to the Toronto Maple Leafs for a 2025 1st rounder, 2026 second round pick, Pavel Gogolev, and Joey Anderson. Davidson expressed the need to «spread out the picks» and he did just that by getting some draft capital 3-4 years down the road. This 2025 1st can be special because the Leafs could really fall off a cliff, with all their contracts expiring around the same time.

2/3: Chicago sent Max Domi and prospect goaltender Dylan Wells to the Dallas Stars in exchange for Anton Khudobin and a 2025 second round pick. Domi was leading the team in points, even when Kane was on the team because of his slow start. I am underwhelmed with this return, simply because I believe we could've gotten a first round pick if we retained some salary.

3/3: This was one trade fans were dreading. The Hawks sent Patrick Kane to the New York Rangers in exchange for a 2022 second round pick, 2025 4th rounder, Andy Welinski, and Vili Saarijävi. Yeah, this one hurt. The 2022 2nd has conditions: if New York makes the Eastern Conference Final, it turns into a 2024 1st, however, that 1st is top-10 protected. Patrick Kane has been the backbone to this team ever since he came in the Windy City 16 years ago. He gave us great memories we all will never forget. Thank you for everything, #88.
