Jonathan Toews Comments on potential Blackhawks return 'That Era's Done'
Nearly two years have passed since Jonathan Toews last skated in an NHL game, but the former Chicago Blackhawks captain insists his career isn't finished yet.
In an interview with The Athletic's Mark Lazerus last week, the three-time Stanley Cup winner revealed his to return to the ice, stating he still has untapped potential.
«I'm not content with how things wrapped up in Chicago,» Toews told Lazerus. «It's not about proving a point-it's about knowing I've got more to offer. I want to dive back in, enjoy myself, and play with passion, while still delivering high-level hockey.»
Toews' last NHL appearance came on April 13, 2023, when he scored in a 5-4 overtime loss, assisted by his long-time teammate
Patrick Kane, a special moment for his final game with Chicago.
Over 15 seasons with the Blackhawks, the 36-year-old tallied 372 goals and 883 points in 1,067 games.
In August 2023, he announced he was stepping away from hockey to focus on his health.
In his discussion with Lazerus, Toews made it clear that a return to the NHL wouldn't involve rejoining the Blackhawks.
«That chapter feels closed,» he said. «A few years back, [Chicago] chose a new path, and I support that. But I don't see myself fitting there anymore. I want to go somewhere I can be myself, play my game, and let my best hockey shine-free from the weight of our Cup-winning past. That era's done.»
While Toews didn't pinpoint a timeline for his recovery or return, the 2025-26 season seems to be his target. T
SN's Pierre LeBrun reported in January that the Winnipeg Jets and Toews share mutual interest, with other teams also in consideration.
Should he hit free agency, fans and teams alike will likely watch closely, as the veteran's experience and skill could make him a coveted addition.
