Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman has chimed in and revealed the real reason as to why Vegas Golden Knights forward Nicolas Roy avoided a lengthy suspension brutal crosscheck on Edmonton Oilers' Trent Frederic during Game 2.

The NHL's Department of Player Safety continues their bold trend of inconsistency in protecting their players, and it certainly showed when they made their decision on Nicolas Roy's cross-check on Friday.
Vegas' fourth-line center earned himself a hearing for the play, but instead of the lengthy suspension that was expected to be handed out, he was dealt a $7,000 fine that will surely hurt his $3M per season income.
Vegas' Nicolas Roy has been fined $7,812.50, the maximum allowable under the CBA, for cross-checking Edmonton's Trent Frederic.
Said the NHL Department of Player Safety on X.
Vegas Golden Knights forward Nicolas Roy has been fined $7,812.50, the maximum allowable under the Collective Bargaining Agreement, for cross-checking Edmonton Oilers forward Trent Frederic during Game 2 of the teams' Second Round series in Las Vegas on Thursday, May 8, the National Hockey League's Department of Player Safety announced today.

The incident occurred at 5:35 of overtime. Roy was assessed a major penalty and game misconduct for cross-checking.

The money goes to the Players' Emergency Assistance Fund.

Sportsnet's NHL insider Elliotte Friedman touched base on the reasoning behind the discipline, and revealed that the league deemed Roy's actions as a 'non-attempt to injure.'
It's rare -- hasn't happened this year, but has in past -- for players to get a hearing and not be suspended.

Roy escapes, because he was reckless instead of trying to injure.

Learned today no player can be fined more than $5K without a hearing.
