GM Brad Treliving may let Mitch Marner walk into free agency instead of trading him, and a surprising contender in the Utah Mammoth seems poised to strike.
GM Brad Treliving and the
Toronto Maple Leafs seem ready to let
Mitch Marner walk into free agency. Instead of attempting to make a deal happen in March, Treliving will lose out on any chance of recouping assets for the former hometown hero.
Now, we play the waiting game. We've seen multiple NHL teams mentioned as suitors for Marner, who will garner a lot of interest in free agency.
Of the teams mentioned before, the
Vegas Golden Knights and
Florida Panthers were just a few who were brought up in discussion. Now, it seems that the list continues to grow, as one team is coming from out of nowhere to attempt to sign Marner if he makes it to free agency
The Utah Mammoth. The newly minted expansion team out in the West is interested in the 102-point forward, according to NHL Insider Elliotte Friedman.
"If there is a one team everyone is watching and saying I'm really curious to see what they do it is Utah. teams believe that Utah is determined to introduce themselves to the NHL in a big way"
Marner would, of course, find himself in good company on the same line as Keller, or Guenther, as a playmaker and sniper.
If Marner isn't the player they could end up signing in July, they've stated they're open to moving they're 4th overall pick for an upgrade in the lineup.
Marner's next contract is projected to be around $13-14 million and could get it on the market.
