'Huge' NHL Goaltender Shockingly Becomes Free Agent After Organization Cuts Ties With Him

A surprise decision has been made by the Montreal Canadiens organization and general manager Kent Hughes after an impressive season by goaltender Jakub Dobes with the organization's NHL and AHL teams.

On June 1st, the Canadiens made the decision to not make a qualifying offer to 6-foot-7 goaltender Joe Vrbetic, who was one of Montreal's draft selections in 2021.

At 22-years of age and an impressive stint of progress throughout the past few years at the ECHL level, the large goaltender is expected to find another NHL organization to sign with this summer.

It's no doubt that Vrbetic deserves another shot at a true NHL career, but with the Montreal Canadiens' stacked prospect pool, he does not stand much chance with four other netminders currently in front of him.

With a quick search offering a glimpse of his playstyle, he is a very calm netminder between the pipes, which complements his 6-foot-7, 190lb frame.

It's quite unclear as to why the Montreal Canadiens decided to move on from this promising goaltender, but he can certainly be of value to teams such as the Chicago Blackhawks, who have a weak goaltending prospect pool.

Other teams, such as the Boston Bruins, New York Rangers or the Minnesota Wild could capitalize on the Canadiens' rich prospect pool, and acquire Vrbetic.

In the coming weeks, the young goaltenders fate in the NHL will either be renewed or a huge flop, time will only tell when free agency opens on July 1st.
